Why Do Slab Leaks Happen?

Slab Leaks in Corona, Ca on the Rise

We’ve recently been getting increased calls from the Corona area about underground slab leaks and pinhole leaks, but why are these leaks happening? Here are some reasons why.

Corrosion

The interaction between the water balance inside a pipe and soil outside of it can induce electrolysis in metallic pipes, causing corrosion inside or outside the pipes, and eventually causing holes.

Many homes that were built during Corona’s housing development spur, starting around 1989, were designed to supply potable water to the home via copper pipes that reside in the soil under the foundation. It’s not surprising that 25 years later many of these homes are experiencing pipe corrosion that is prompting slab leaks.

Abrasion

Water moving through pipes makes them vibrate or expand and contract, rubbing them over whatever is around them. Over time the pipe will grate until it finally springs a leak.

Pressure

Earthquakes or poor construction causes pipes to experience high amounts of pressure. This can lead to pipes being crushed or creased, which in turn is a recipe for disaster. Water pumps, too need to be monitored for pressure issues.
